The urban-renewal development encompasses the densely populated “Village-within-the-City” in Nanshan district of Shenzhen, where migrant workers from all regions of China gather and transformed the area through decades into a place of multi-provincial culture with hyper density and proximity. In the new master-plan proposal, the phenomenon is transformed into a three-dimensional public space network with landscape and activity space, in the hope to maintain the vibrancy and social engagement of the district. The planning strategy is to distribute the building density along the perimeter of the site as much as possible in order to create a large and open “central green valley”, with a multi-dimensional system interconnecting all functionality and ample green leisure space, and providing an ideal platform for public engagement in varies scales and domains. The development is envisioned to be a prototype of hyper-density urban-renewal, in which sustainability, wellness and social connections are not compromised.
